Not only is there Off The Grid, but Oakland’s annual, packed Eat Real Festival features dozens of local food trucks from all over the Bay Area. You cannot talk food trucks without starting with the food that started it all, the glorious taco which Oakland has a plenty, and now there are plenty of others that are continuing the glory of food on-the-go.
Taco Trucks are the OG food trucks and nothing screams Oakland food trucks more than Taqueria Sinaloa. Whether you go for their fish trucks or their meat, the agua frescas are great too and if you are open minded be sure to eat the tender lengua, soft and luxurious.
Another fantastic taco truck in Oakland is Mi Grullense. This Fruitvale staple has great tacos smothered in tart, spicy salsa to cut through the richness of the carne asada, al pastor, chorizo, or carnitas. Also check out the vegetarian quesadilla, and wash it all down with the exceptional horchata.
Royal Egyptian Cuisine
Royal Egyptian Cuisine is Middle Eastern street food done right. If anything’s wrong with this truck it’s that there’s too many good choices. You can’t go wrong with the tender lamb or chicken gyros with pickled cabbage and cucumber tzatziki, falafels made with fava beans in the traditional Egyptian way, spit roasted pork, or the smoky chicken shawarma.
No Worries Filipino Vegan Cuisine
It might be hard to imagine Filipino cuisine without pork as a staple ingredient, but you won’t miss it at this food truck which gives fantastic renditions of lumpia (fried egg rolls), adobo (soy vinegar based stew), mungo (mung bean stew) and pancit (stir fried vermicelli) made with vegetables, tofu and faux meats.
If a burger truck can be an Oakland institution, Fivetenburger would be it. Grassfed beef, and options of cheeses and a fried egg. If you’re not feeling like a burger the spicy chicken sandwich and grilled cheese are also great choices. The key to any meal here is to get a side order of truffle tater tots. Yup, you read that right.
When you think food trucks, you usually don’t think Californian cuisine—fresh veggies, locally sourced meats, and simple, satisfying preparations that make the ingredients shine. While there are delicious vegetarian options it’s the meat dishes that really shine, such as brisket sandwich with savory jam. The lemon ricotta donuts are also not to be missed.
This vegan eatery will please everyone, no matter whether they are vegan or not. The patties are savory with a toothsome texture, and the buns are soft and fluffy. The burgers are topped with all the fixins, including vegan cheddar and homemade special sauce. Be sure to get a side of sweet potato fries to round out the meal.
